Reading List
All of the following are available through the library and each one is excellent. There are many books and videos on clicker training. Most are very good. Don't Shoot The Dog by Karen Pryor
The Bible for operant conditioning. As she says the book, "...it is not about training your dog. It is about training anything with a brain stem". She also has a clicker book and video (below) that are available through the library.
Clicker Magic by Karen Pryor
Video demonstrating the use of the clicker in real training situations.
Clicker Training for Dogs by Karen Pryor
Short pamphlet but a very good quick reference.
Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson
Excellent for understanding the difference between humans and dogs. Gives good advice on correcting problem behaviors.
Dogs are from Neptune by Jean Donaldson
Specific answers to specific questions, mostly dealing with dog on dog aggression.
The Other End Of The Leash by Patricia McConnell
Cannot recommend it enough. Really helps you understand the world from the dog's point of view.
The Cautious Canine by Patricia McConnell
For reactive or leash aggressive dogs.
For the Love of the Dog by Patricia McConnell
Understanding emotion in you and your dog. Great read, inclusive without being technical.
Click for Joy by Melissa C. Alexander
Very specific responses to specific training issues. Done in a question and answer format with good cross referencing between related problems.
Bones Would Rain From The Sky by Suzanne Clothier
Not really about training, but it will help you understand your dog in a different way than you are used to.
Eminent Dogs, Dangerous Men by Donald McCaig
Not about dog training at all, but you will enjoy it. It is an account of his search through Scotland and Ireland for a border collie. We learned more about herding from this book than anywhere else.
Canine Body Language a Photographic Guide by Brenda Aloff
An absolute must for anyone who wants to know what is going on inside their dog.
On Talking Terms With Dogs: Calming Signals by Turid Rugaas
Worth reading. The companion video is available and it is very good.
