Reading List

All of the following are available through the library and each one is excellent.  There are many books and videos on clicker training.  Most are very good.  You will just need to check out a few and use the ones that work best for you.  Sources for purchasing include www.amazon.com and www.dogwise.com.

pawDon't Shoot The Dog by Karen Pryor

The Bible for operant conditioning.  As she says the book, "...it is not about training your dog.  It is about training anything with a brain stem".  She also has a clicker book and video (below) that are available through the library.

pawClicker Magic by Karen Pryor

Video demonstrating the use of the clicker in real training situations.

pawClicker Training for Dogs by Karen Pryor

Short pamphlet but a very good quick reference.

pawCulture Clash by Jean Donaldson

Excellent for understanding the difference between humans and dogs.  Gives good advice on correcting problem behaviors.

pawDogs are from Neptune by Jean Donaldson

Specific answers to specific questions, mostly dealing with dog on dog aggression.

pawThe Other End Of The Leash by Patricia McConnell

Cannot recommend it enough.  Really helps you understand the world from the dog's point of view.

pawThe Cautious Canine by Patricia McConnell

For reactive or leash aggressive dogs.

pawFor the Love of the Dog by Patricia McConnell

Understanding emotion in you and your dog.  Great read, inclusive without being technical.

pawClick for Joy by Melissa C. Alexander

Very specific responses to specific training issues.  Done in a question and answer format with good cross referencing between related problems.

pawBones Would Rain From The Sky by Suzanne Clothier

Not really about training, but it will help you understand your dog in a different way than you are used to.

pawEminent Dogs, Dangerous Men by Donald McCaig

Not about dog training at all, but you will enjoy it.  It is an account of his search through Scotland and Ireland for a border collie.  We learned more about herding from this book than anywhere else.

pawCanine Body Language a Photographic Guide by Brenda Aloff

An absolute must for anyone who wants to know what is going on inside their dog.

pawOn Talking Terms With Dogs: Calming Signals by Turid Rugaas

Worth reading. The companion video is available and it is very good.
